Restaurants and menus
Spaniards traditionally eat three courses at both lunch and dinner. However, it’s not uncommon to share a first course, or to order un sólo plato (just a main course), if you’re not that hungry. Many restaurants offer bargain lunchtime set menus called the menú del día. For a fixed price (usually €8–15 in an everyday eatery, and €25–40 in a gourmet restaurant), you’ll get a choice of first course, a main dish and dessert or coffee, plus a glass of either wine (or more), beer or bottled water, and bread.
Restaurants feature a grading system, from five forks to one, marked on the door of the restaurant. The system is an indication of price, and grades the facilities and service, not the quality of the food.
While restaurants offer a full menu, often with a fixed-price menu available, cafeteríes usually focus on platos combinados, which combine main courses and accompaniments such as steak, eggs, chips and salad served on the same plate.
Most bars and cervecerías (draft beer bars) also serve tapas, sandwiches (bocadillos) or limited platos combinados. In summer their pavement terraces will look alluring, but remember, prices are higher if you sit at a table or outside rather than at the bar.
The most insignificant meal of the day in Spain is generally breakfast, except at hotels, which offer continental breakfasts or buffets. A true Madrid breakfast is churros, fritters, sometimes made before your eyes. You can dunk churros in your coffee, or eat them as Spaniards do, with extremely thick, strong hot chocolate.
